OVERVIEW

The Christian Service Program at Iona Prep stems from the Gospel command to serve others. All Iona Preparatory students perform volunteer service in a context in which the recipients of their service are people whose lifestyle indicates a genuine need for their time and talents.

Freshmengo once a year in small groups to a location arranged by the director of the service program. Some examples are: Food Patch in Millwood, NY; Food Bank NYC in the Bronx; St. Crispin’s Homeless Shelter and Food Pantry in the Bronx and Hawthorne Country Day School.

Sophomores perform 10 hours of service at a location of their choice. They make their own arrangements and schedules.Five of these hours may, if the student chooses, be performed at Iona Prep activities.

Juniors perform 15 hours of service at a location of their choice. They make their own arrangements and schedules. Five of these hours may, if the student chooses, be performed at Iona Prep activities.

Seniors perform 50 hours of service at a location of their choice. They make their own arrangements and schedules. Ten of these hours may, if the student chooses, be performed at Iona Prep activities such as the blood drive.

Students must ensure that they place themselves in volunteer situations where they can fulfill their duty in a meaningful way. Lack of payment is not enough for work to qualify as service. Working for a business, whether or not it is owned by one’s family, will probably not qualify as service. Coaching a team or tutoring in an after-school program will qualify. If a sophomore or junioris in doubt as to the quality of his service, he should speak with Mrs. Kiers.

Seniors should speak to Mr. Kiers and should not begin service work without approval from him. Parents of seniors can easily get updates on deadlines and service opportunities. Send an email to mpkiers@ionaprep.org. Request to be placed on the senior service mailing list.
