The Academic Program for current seniors graduating May 2009

Characteristics
All students are required to take four years of English, social studies, mathematics, religious studies, science, and three credits of a foreign language. Half credit courses are required in music, art, health, MS Office and college writing. Each student must complete two credits of Physical education over four years. This total of 28 credits exceeds the New York State standard of 22 credits. All students are required to take SAT I Exams.

Advanced Placement
Iona Prep offers the following AP courses: Biology, Calculus AB, Chemistry, Physica, English Language and Literature, European History, Government and Politics, Physics B, Spanish, Italian, Statistics and U.S. History. One hundred five students in the Class of 2008 sat for 296 examinations. Sixty percent scored three or better. Students are limited to three AP courses in a single year.

Weight System
STEP, Advanced Placement and honors courses are weighted in determining Cumulative GPA. A weight of 1.05 is awarded to STEP and Advanced Placement and 1.025 is awarded to honors courses.

Placement
Students are admitted to Iona Prep through results obtained on the Test for Admission to Catholic High Schools and a grade school recommendation. Iona Prep accepts students who score at and above the 50th percentile on this test or the ISEE. Students are placed by ability but it is not restrictive. For example, a student may take honors in English/Social Studies but not in Math/Science or vice versa. The term Regents refers to subjects that conclude in a New York State Board of Regents final examination. All Honors classes and STEP classes take appropriate Regents exams.

Superior Talent Enrichment Program (High Honors)
Fifteen per cent of each entering class is invited to be in the STEP or high honors program.  They score in the first decile on the entrance exam. These students are on an accelerated path that includes access to Advanced Placement courses in sophomore year.  These select students have the opportunity to take seven or more Advanced Placement courses for part of their curriculum. It is an intensive academic program that requires proficiency in Latin in addition to the study of a modern language. This group of students has consistently scored above 1300 on the SAT I composite of Math and Reading.
